What is it? A visual tire gauge.
One of the simplest things any motorist can do to improve their gas mileage, especially with gas prices so high, is to ensure that your tires are properly inflated. Improperly inflated tires, specifically ones low on air, are physically “smaller” than fully inflated tires (think of a balloon), and therefore have a smaller total circumference. Ergo, for the amount of work your engine does to make your tires spin around one time, those tires aren’t traveling as far as they would if your tire was inflated to its proper, full dimensions.
Yet, checking tire pressure regularly is one of those tasks that most people don’t do as often as they should. We fill up with gas all the time, but unless a tire “looks low” we typically don’t think about it. And even when we do think about it, removing each valve cap and checking the air pressure of each tire can be tedious and dirty work, assuming you even have a tire gauge handy, i.e. prudently keep one in your glove box. This particular product fixes this “human behavior” shortcoming, and lets you know with a simple glance if you need to add air to a tire.
The product comes with four “tire minders”, which are small pressure gauges themselves. They come set to a specific tire pressure, and therefore you need to order them for the proper inflation for your specific tires. You can find out what the proper tire pressure is for your car by opening the driver’s side door, and looking for a sticker or plate on the side of the door’s edge, or check your owner’s manual.
The way the product works is that if a tire has the proper pressure, or is within four pounds of the target pressure, a green band can be clearly seen (see video). If a tire falls four or more pounds below its target, the green disappears and a red ring is left showing. This is your indication that your tire needs air. It’s that simple.
The product also comes with a tire gauge to use when filling your tires to ensure you fill them to the proper level. The gauge is unlike the traditional “pen” style with a plastic rule sliding out the end to indicate the pressure. This one has a round analog needle that is easy to read (see video).
So all in all, this product not only worked as advertised, but when fuel economy is so important these days, we deem this product to be an absolute Must Have.
