| | | ASOTVI RATING: CONDITIONALLY WORKS AS ADVERTISED |
What is it? Transdermal patch to repel insects.
This product is a transparent transdermal square patch, approximately 2” x 2”. It releases a high level of Vitamin B1 directly through the skin into the bloodstream, which is safe to do, as excess vitamin B1 is excreted from the body, and in this case via the pores in the skin like sweat. It is this process that the vendor claims to be able to repel biting insects, as the “odor” created by the excreted B1 safely repels the bugs.
According to the product’s instructions, we applied the patch to our test subject in an area of skin with no hair, in this case the small of the back, and waited 2 hours before going outdoors, in the month of June, in Florida, where mosquitoes are common.
Our first observation of the product is that within the two hour waiting period for the B1 to take effect, and for several hours thereafter, the “odor” of the B1 becomes quite prominent - so we at least knew the product was in our subject’s system and being secreted. Actually, our test subject smelled like a vitamin store, which was most unpleasant.
After going outdoors, over the course of the next few hours, our test subject was repeatedly bitten by mosquitoes, who apparently didn’t seem to mind the Vitamin B1 smell at all. See our video for the eight (8) bites we documented.
Of note, this same individual had been at this same location on a different day, using a popular spray-on insect repellent and received no bites whatsoever.
Review Update: Based upon new information provided to ASOTVI from the maker of this product, we are pleased to provide a product review update.
In our original evaluation our test subject tried the product per the instructions, but we didn’t have much success with it, and reported those observations as illustrated in our video. The vendor of this product has since informed us that this product doesn’t work for everyone, and for those it does work for, sometimes multiple patches are required for it to be effective. We were previously unaware of these conditions.
Thus, based upon independent information they have provided, it is to be understood that the product can work for some people. ASOTVI has therefore upgraded our evaluation for this product to “Conditionally Works.”
The vendor also advises that if you are interested in using this product, to contact them directly and request a free sample to try first to see if it works for you or not before making a purchase.
