 What is it? A kitchen mandolin (a food slicer).
This product is an inexpensive version of a traditional kitchen mandolin, which is a device that slices food by passing the food over a stationary blade, as opposed to passing the blade of a knife through stationary food.
The product comes out of the box ready to go, with no assembly required, other that extending its fold-up legs into their upright position. From there you have a choice of 5 different cutting styles: 3 straight slices at different depths, and 2 julienne styles, thick and thin, which not only slice, but also cut vertically as well, producing a long, thin cut – like a French fry.
The product also comes with a safety holder, resembling a small bowl, that keeps your fingers away from the cutting blades. This item has spring-loaded prongs on the inside to securely hold whatever it is you’re cutting. This safety holder needs to be used at all times when cutting.
We conducted three separate evaluations of this product. The first was to slice an onion with the medium sized slice insert. It worked fine. Our only note in that particular test was that we used a very large onion, and while it worked fine for us, it is possible to find even larger onions that might be wider than the unit. If so, you would need to trim the onion ahead of time to a diameter of no larger than the width of the cutting blades for it to work properly.
Our next evaluation was with a potato, using the thinnest slicer. Once again we had no trouble producing very thin slices such as those necessary for dishes like potatoes au gratin. Lastly, we tried the julienne blade, which not only slices, but has vertical blades on the insert to cut the food from a perpendicular lengthwise direction. This allowed us to produce French fry cuts quite easily.
The product also comes with a storage rack for all of the cutting inserts. As noted, after use, the legs can be folded up for convenient storage.
The product’s instructions advise not to clean the unit in a dishwasher as the high temps may warp it and dull the blades. We would also caution that the base unit’s blades are exposed when the safety insert is not in place, and therefore caution needs to be exercised when cleaning after use. Likewise, the julienne inserts have exposed blades that also warrant caution when cleaning.
We observed this product to work as advertised.
