 What is it? A patented and chemical-free magnetic replacement for laundry detergent.

This patented product (Patent No.: US 6,612,137 B2 9/2/03) consists of two magnets with a blue plastic or rubber-like coating to protect the inside of your washer from the magnets. The magnets are each about the size of a golf ball and very strong, so keep them away from any digital media or devices. The instructions indicate to put them in your washing machine on opposite sides of the agitator with a full load, with no other form of detergent.
The way the product works is to use a different means of changing the solvency of water. That is all that traditional laundry detergent does, not actually doing the cleaning directly, but by changing the solvency of the water, which actually does the cleaning. These two blue magnets similarly change the solvency of the water in your washing machine to achieve the same cleaning effect.
For our evaluation (see video), we used two clean white tee-shirts, which we soiled with actual black dirt to better observe contrast. We did not use any bleach on either shirt, even though bleach would have been appropriate to use for excessively dirty whites, as was true in this case; again to better observe basic cleaning and to better observe contrast in cleaning. We washed one tee-shirt using the magnetic product and nothing else, and the other tee-shirt in a separate load with traditional liquid laundry detergent.
Both the magnetic product and the liquid detergent on first glance appeared to have cleaned both tee-shirts pretty well. However, on closer inspection, we observed (see video) that while neither the product nor the liquid detergent got the shirts absolutely pure white without bleach (as we intended), the shirt cleaned with the magnetic product got more of the dirt out than the one cleaned with liquid detergent. Therefore, we observed this product to do a little better job than the liquid laundry detergent. This product works as advertised.
The vendor of this product also offers an enzymatic spray for stains, which was not evaluated. It also advises to use bleach on whites to get “whiter whites.” We used neither. Thus, our experiment wasn’t performed as you would normally wash whites to get them their whitest, but done simply as a compare and contrast illustration.
The product comes with a lifetime warranty. The major benefit of this product is to enable the user to no longer use chemical-based laundry detergents. This is a direct cost savings (and space saver!). Fabrics, and possibly your skin (if you have sensitive skin) can also benefit from less exposure to chemicals. And lastly, there are direct health and environmental benefits to chemical-free washing.
