ASOTVI Review

What is it? A portable antenna and television tuner for both digital and analog programming that connects to your computer.

This product effectively turns your laptop or desktop computer (as long as it has an available USB 2.0 port) into an HD television. It also offers recording features as well as editing and DVD burning software.

To use the product you first load and run the installation CD, which installs the appropriate device drivers and NVIDIA codecs. You then connect the main unit to your PC with the supplied USB cable. The unit is powered from your computer. There is no power cable needed.

To watch TV you activate the remote software, which then allows you to use the included TV Remote. The remote is very full of features. You can also use an onscreen virtual remote. When you hit the Power button on the remote, it launches the TV application. The TV application has a menu, and one of the first things you need to do is have the application go Scan all available channels it can find. It records all that have programming in a menu for you, which you can then scroll through via your remote.

You have the option of having the GT unit get its signal from either a small antenna that comes with the product, or you can hook it to a coaxial cable feed for cable service. This might be handy for an office that doesn’t have a TV, but does have an available cable jack with programming. The scanning process can look for channels on both the Antenna or Cable, and will also look for both analog broadcast and digital.

Please note that if you are using the included antenna that reception varies by location and position of the antenna, just like any TV antenna you’ve ever used. So you may have to find a place where the unit picks up the best reception for the best results.

In our evaluation we found both analog broadcast channels as well as digital channels. Please note that next February 2009 all analog broadcasts will be terminated. The unit also found digital broadcast HDTV signals.

From the TV remote you can also change the aspect ratio of the computer screen from 4:3 to 16:9 or a Pan Scan mode that fills the available screen space. You can watch TV in a window on your monitor or full screen. We observed the product to be extremely versatile.
