This program, developed by Jill Johnson, is explained in detail in a short paperback book and on a variety of DVDs. We read the book and watched the Introductory DVD as well as the Level IV workout DVD. The Oxycise! program fundamentally consists of deep breathing exercises performed for 15 minutes each day.

The key to the program is providing your body with a higher concentration and volume of oxygen, which is essential to oxidizing (burning) fat and being expelled from your body in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). The program teaches you how to breathe fully and deeply, using 100% of your lung capacity, known as “diaphragmatic breathing” (from your diaphragm, or “belly breathing”) as opposed to shallow chest breathing, which people get into the habit of doing as they age.

The result is a higher “aerobic” exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide. Amazingly, it really is that simple, but that isn’t the whole story.

This program also institutes a routine of isometric and stretching exercises to be performed during the cycles of deep breathing over the 15 minute period. This activity is intended to flex a variety of the body’s muscle groups, which then increase their oxygen demand to function, which then, in turn, serves to oxidize fat and expels it into the bloodstream as carbon dioxide. This allows you to target specific areas of the body to tone and improve. Presumably, if you are familiar with yoga, that could also be incorporated as well into a regimen such as this – as long as the focus is kept on the breathing.

Ironically, if you think about it, traditional aerobic exercise – which we are told takes at least 20 minutes to begin to burn fat – is designed to get your muscles moving and blood pumping such that your respiration increases in response to oxygen demand, thus achieving the improved oxygen-CO2 exchange. Who knew you could just jump right to the breathing and skip all the sweat and strain, and actually achieve even better results?

So does 15 minutes a day of deep breathing with isometrics actually burn calories? According to two independent university laboratory studies, one performed by the University of Southern California and the other by the University of Colorado, it does. They found that Oxycise! actually consumes more oxygen and burns more calories – 40% more – than the same amount of time riding on a stationary bicycle. And the Oxycise! program can be done standing, sitting, or even lying down. The vendor even offers a CD for commuters to listen to in the car while driving.

A three week group study was also performed on eight subjects, and an average of 6.75 pounds was lost by each person using the program over that brief amount of time.

Another direct observation that came from the independent testing was that this program didn’t need to be done contiguously in order to work. For example, the 15 minutes a day could be broken up into 5 minutes in the morning, 5 minutes during the day, and 5 minutes in the evening, or any convenient combination. Whereas, for the stationary bike, warm up time was required as well as contiguous effort. This program requires no warm up or cool down time.

Now like any program designed to improve your health, it only works if you use it consistently, not just a few times intermittently or for only a week. Thankfully, incorporating a program like this into your daily lifestyle isn’t that onerous of a task and is very inexpensive. We can share with you from firsthand experience, that from the very first session of trying Oxycise!, you can feel the energy rush and increased alertness it produces almost immediately.

What is also very appealing about this program is that it doesn’t involve any caloric restrictions (diets!), rather it simply encourages you to eat fresher, healthier foods – and, most importantly, to avoid “starving” your body, which is what makes it hoard calories. It requires no gym memberships, gadgets, equipment, workout clothing—nothing, and it only takes 15 minutes a day to do.

Based upon our observation of the empirical evidence developed and from clinical expert endorsements, we concluded that this program works as advertised. If you’ve struggled with weight-loss, you really need to give this program a try.
